RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Research and Development (“R&D”) has contributed in no small measure to Malaysia’s leadership position in the global palm oi l industry. The Government is encouraging greater private sector contribution to the R&D effort to complement the activities of government agencies such as the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (“MPOB”) and Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (“PORIM”).

Our investment in R&D is part of the Group’s strategy to be a key player in the oil palm industry. The R&D Centre that was set up some years ago has a dedicated pool of researchers and agronomists. The Group has also established a Research and Development Advisory Committee whose major function is to identify R&D areas that could be beneficial to the Group’s operations, which include seeking breakthroughs in agronomics, pes t and di sease cont rol and mechanisation of field operations.

The R&D Centre has collaborated with other research units such as MPOB and Universiti Putra Malaysia (“UPM”) to improve agronomic management. Specific projects include a collaborative effort with MPOB to determine suitable protocols for the establishment of leguminous cover crops in peat soils and a joint-research project with UPM to look into phosphate requirements for peat planting. The Centre is also researching into methods of controlling the increasing threat of bunch moths through chemical, agronomical and biological means. Among the new projects the Centre is exploring is the Oil Palm Tissue Culture Programme as part of the Group’s long-term yield enhancement strategy.

Tradewinds Plantation Academy (TPA)

In addition to the R&D Centre, the group has also set up Tradewinds Plantation Academy in Sarawak in 1999 to provide training at both professional and academic levels to both staff and the industry as a whole.

TPA plays a major role in our effort to continuously improve and equip our workforce with the necessary skills, knowledge and exposure for optimum performance. It also acts as a service centre for the dissemination of information on innovative methods and technologies available in the plantation industry. The training has been further expanded during the current financial year to increase the asset value of our workforce.
